Meet Father Nature

Proudly photographing pests since 2015

I'm a nature photographer with an odd focus. Pun intended. I shoot plants, and the occasional bug, that most people would rather spray, pull, or swat.

I've won some ribbons along the way. A few from the Napa Valley Mustard Festival, and before that the Alameda County Fair, back when I was still shooting trees and aiming higher. Nice to have. Not really the point.

Father by Nature

I'm Andrew. I make portraits of weeds. cattails, grasses, seed heads, the stuff everyone else sprays or pulls or steps on. I started out on a Hasselblad, shooting square medium-format film, and I never stopped seeing the world that way. I don't shoot square anymore, but my brain still does. Everything gets framed for that square in my head. Somebody's got to think these weeds are magnificent. Might as well be me.

It's Complicated

It's complicated because I have a problem. Every time I go out, I tell myself I'll shoot something new. Every time, I come home with two hundred more pictures of seed pods. I can't help it. You get close to one and it stops being a weed. It's all texture and color and light, and I'm gone again.

Pest control, the scenic route

Plants are most of what I shoot, but the bugs get their portraits too. The beetle on the blade. The fly nobody invited. I work up close and handheld, mostly losing to the wind, until something you'd have swatted or sprayed ends up framed on your wall instead. Not everyone wants a beetle on their wall, but for the ones who do, I've got you covered.
